Our School.

How we Work

Lessons take place in small groups of three children and two adults. Children move between groups for different lessons, depending on their abilities and preferred ways of learning. There are three shared learning spaces set up for both group and independent tasks. Children are free to work in ways that help them feel calm and focused, including floor work and peanut-ball seating.

A small quiet room is available for one-to-one sessions and targeted support.

Our kitchen space allows children to learn basic cooking skills and prepare simple snacks.

We have a large enclosed garden provides room for play and outdoor learning and PE. Our bushcraft area includes a fire pit, an allotment, and a space for wood‑working activities.

Our Mission

The school’s mission is simple yet profound:
To give young people the opportunity to engage in education within a system built personally and uniquely for them. Success is measured not only by qualifications but also by confidence, attendance, emotional regulation, and readiness.

Identifying Need and Assessment

Learners’ starting points are established through a comprehensive assessment process that utilises EHCP outcomes, information from the local authority and internal diagnostic assessments. Staff engage with learners during the induction process to capture their voices. Interests, preferences, strengths, and learning styles, provision is personalised from the very beginning.

Each learner’s ILP comprises a combination of EHCP targets and academic goals. Learners have weekly meetings with staff.

We use a gentle and child‑centred approach to assessment. Rather than formal tests, we focus on really getting to know each learner as an individual.

We assess children through ongoing observations, watching how they play, explore, communicate, and take part in activities. Staff also gather photos of children’s work and learning moments, which help us build a picture of their strengths, interests, and next steps.

During the first six weeks, we complete baseline assessments. These are relaxed, informal checks that help us understand what each child already knows and can do. This allows us to plan the right support and opportunities for their learning.

We do not carry out any formal assessments such as SATs. Our aim is to make learning enjoyable and pressure‑free, ensuring every child feels confident and valued as they grow and progress at their own pace

Uniform

At Pushforward, learners can choose to wear the school uniform or wear their own comfortable clothes. We know that every learner is different and feeling relaxed and at ease during the school day really helps them enjoy their learning. For some children, especially those with sensory needs, certain fabrics or uniform items may feel uncomfortable—so it’s absolutely fine to choose clothing that suits them best. We encourage families to pick clothes that help their child feel calm, confident, and ready for the day—whether that’s soft jumpers, stretchy trousers, or their favourite comfy outfit.  Above all, we want children to feel happy, comfortable, and ready to learn. The right clothing plays a big part in that.

Lunch & Snacks

Children will need to bring a packed lunch and a drink with them each day. We encourage families to choose foods that their child enjoys and that will help keep them energised and ready to learn throughout the day. Pushforward will also offer a range of snacks for learners who may want something extra.

As with all our routines, we aim to be flexible and responsive to individual needs. There is no set time for eating, as we understand that children may feel hungry at different times. Learners are welcome to eat when they need to, helping them stay comfortable, focused, and ready to take part in activities. Our approach ensures that children can meet their own needs in a calm and supported way, promoting independence and wellbeing.
